Some of my Mosaics
Seahorse
Tiles:
Ceramic
Base Used:
Slate
Time Taken:
About two days.
Created:
2007
Price:
Negotiable

This was the first mosaic I've done and it took about two full days to do.  I started by laying the shape out on a wooden board first.   At first I was unsure as to what material to use as a background.  I thought about using crushed glass or beads, but in then end went for blue tiles.  Many were cut some in half, and laid short end on from the seahorse, reaching out like rays of sunshine from the white tiles.  The idea being to draw your attention to the main design.

I used a mixture of white tile grout and cement to darken it.  I could have just left the grout in its original colour but then the white tiles would have been very difficult to see.  These days I would just use a different coloured grout rather than trying to darken it myself.

After grouting I left it for a couple of days to dry before cleaning the tiles to give them their shiny look you see here.

Click on the thumbnails below for larger images.

First the smashed white tiles were laid out on a board in the shape of a seahorse. The seahorse complete but as yet not grouted. The seahorse seen here has now been grouted and cleaned up. The seahorse seen here on display outside.
The Golden Condor
Tiles:
Mirror, Glass
Base Used:
Fixed onto side wall.
Time Taken:
Due to this piece being created entirely outdoors and a long wet British summer in 2008 this mosaic took several months and was only completed in mid 2009.
Created:
2008 - 2009
Price:
Stuck to an unmovable object so physically impossible to sell.

The original Chamomile Seat. An early design for the Chamomile Seat Mosaic; in this case, a bird flying off into the sunset. The template for the condor. The first tiles are attached, early 2008.
The Condor begining to take shape. The blue tiles forming the sea have been added. The mosaic is half complete. Much of the tiling is now complete and the drainage hole on the left has been filled in, bar a small gap at the base which will be left open.
The spaces round the suns have been given neat square surrounds; the left hand wall has been grouted and the top has received its first tiles. The grout has been added to more of the mosaic to make it watertight. Bar a little sanding down to get rid of the excess grout, the conder is virtually complete. March 2009: The mosaic still needs sanding and the Chamomile Seat restocking.
